Encrypted messaging Application Signal was Blocked in Egypt

Recently Egypt has blocked  Signal application – the application for secured encrypted messaging.

Several users  on Twitter reported that they could no longer use Signal application: neither send nor receive messages with Egyptian IP addresses.

“Over the weekend, we heard reports that Signal was not functioning reliably in Egypt or the United Arab Emirates,” Open Whisper Systems writes. “We investigated with the help of Signal users in those areas, and found that several ISPs were blocking communication with the Signal service and our website. It turns out that when some states can’t snoop, they censor.”

This is not the first time Egypt blocks access to websites and applications. Several VOIP services like Skype, Viber and Whatsapp were also blocked in 2015.
